Technical Forum - Trac Scan series

The "trac-scan" series is a new delivery technology exclusively designed and built by iicorr, two systems are in service at the moment with a third system in the final stages of design. By the end of 2005 it is hoped there will be 4 systems in the operational pool.

The first system was designed and built for a specific project where normal scanning tools and pigging technology could not fulfil the operators requirements. The first trac-scan system was deployed in 2004 and was a complete success, resulting in over a £700,000 cost saving for the operator.

The trac-scan system is in essence a multi-purpose delivery package, as standard it is fitted with lighting, camera and scanning arm, the design of the unit arm allows the single axis motor to perform twin axis C-Scan wall mapping by the unique design of the "helix-scanner unit"

The twin trac system is fitted with a high-tension spring roller, this allows for the navigation of tighter bends in the line; the spring roller also provides the track's with constant traction on the pipe surface

The unit can be fitted with ultrasonic or eddy-current probes, the standard system has a reach of 300mt with conventional umbilical but can be fitted with up to 2.5km of fibre-optic control umbilical. The units current configuration is set for 14" lines, this can be varied +/- 2" and by varying the chassis larger applications can be inspected

During the 2004 project the unit was fitted with ¾" high pressure jetting hose to clear the internal surface of the pipe-line.

The trac-scan system can scan internally on all planes, horizontally or vertically including bends. The IC01 is currently undergoing design work with a view of attaching recovery and manipulator arms, this type of technology could be used to recover pigs, remove debris, insert plugs etc

IC02

The IC02 in-line trac-scan system is the latest operational system designed and built by iicorr, this system was built for a specific project where previously redundant risers and flowline were required to be inspected to verify their use for hydrocarbon transportation.

The IC02 system as standard is fitted with a camera and scanning unit, the scanning module can also be changed for a high pressure-water 4-jet module.

In its current configuration the unit is set to 6" but this can be varied.

IC03

The IC03 currently under the final stages of design review, this will be a three trac system capable of ultrasonic (compression and shear wave) eddy current inspection on pipelines and tubulars of 24" and upwards.

The fourth system in development will be of a similar design but for much larger applications with a longer reach using fibre-optic control.

As with the existing system the new systems will be multi functional and modular allowing the unit to be very flexible and multi-purpose
