iicorr use the latest specialist data gathering software packages for all remote scanning tools. This package gathers the data as well as controlling the scanning tool's functions. The package is transferable from system to system and is being constantly updated.

The basics of the scanning tool incorporate a twin axis system to give the ability to "map" an entire section of tubular over a given distance. All tools map in the axial and rotary axis to give 360 degree complete coverage. In essence the scanning tool is a delivery system as the type of inspection technology fitted to the tools can be interchangeable from compression ultrasonic to eddy current. This gives great flexibility and multiple use of the scanning tools.

The most common type of ultrasonic inspection is compression wave ultrasonics giving wall thickness measurements on a 10x10mm resolution, this can be reduced for higher resolution applications, the compression probes in current use are accurate to 0.2mm.

A recent development with the latest software is the ability to profile the internal surface of the tubular, this method involves capturing the ultrasonic signal from the front face of the probe to the front face of the tubular allowing for the profiling and surface definition of the internal surface to be mapped.

Eddy current can be used both subsea and topside to detect cracking and with the iicorr exclusive system "trec-gauge" for wall thickness. The trec-gauge system can also be used to penetrate up to 50mm of non-ferrite coating giving it the ability to "see-through" coatings and fire protection systems.

Presently the trec-gauge is capable of single point examination on a 40mmx40mm footprint with a sensitivity of 0.5mm.

The standard eddy current system has seen use in varying areas, most recent in the detection of armour wire anomalies within flexible pipe both internally and externally.

iicorr are also leading the way in armour wire hydrogen induced crack detection (HIC) a recent programme of inspection on a recovered flexible pipe allowed the conformation of an eddy current/ultrasonic inspection technique to detect hic on the individual armour wire.

Scanning Tools  
   
A variety of scanning tools exist to perform the many varying techniques available, the main series of tools are gravity fed, subsea caisson and riser tools. This series of tools range from 3" to 42", with some of the tools capable of traversing slow bends in pipe-work.

NDT image The multi-diameter tool allows the inspection to be performed over varying internal diameter without the need to recover and reset the tools centralisation, the probe can be recovered into the middle of the tool allowing it to pass safely over such features as a swedge point.

One of the large diameter caisson tools, this particular tool has a hollow centre which gives the ability to run separate lines through the tool such as plug pressurisation lines etc.

The weld inspection tool (below) is the latest in the remote scanning tool range. This tool is for between 3" to 6" applications and has a 4 probe configuration for the inspection of welds or normal wall thickness mapping.

ROV/Diver Tools
 

A range of external diver and ROV deployed scanning tools exists which allow the external inspection of pipe-lines and subsea flow lines where internal inspection is not possible due to the line configuration or distance. These tools are operated from the vessel in the same manor as the internal tools and provide the same quality and resolution.

The ROV tools are made of light weight construction and are easily manipulated into position by any work-class ROV, the ROV deployed tools are capable of C-Scan scanning over 360 degrees.

The diver deployed tool is multi functional and can be used subsea or topside using both eddy-current and ultrasonics with a water-jet unit fitted.
