Craig Moor - Training And Going Places
A profile of a Graduate Engineer turning Engineer at iicorr

"I was born in Newcastle and went on to study at the University of Northumbria. I completed my Mechanical Engineering Degree (BEng) honours in May 2004 and joined iicorr Ltd as a Graduate Integrity Engineer, based in Aberdeen".

Working at iicorr has involved providing integrity and assurance support for many of the oil and gas operators across a global network. I have been involved in various projects for companies, such as BP Caspian, Talisman Energy UK Ltd, ConocoPhillips, CNR international and Petrofac. The workload is, and continues to be diverse, giving me the opportunity to experience many different aspects of the oil and gas industry.

Having spent periods of time on secondment to various operators I have gained an appreciation for the challenges that surround the safe running and integrity assurance of offshore installations on a daily basis.

I was recently promoted to the role of Integrity Engineer and will be based in Malaysia for 3 months working on an integrity project and fulfilling a business development role. The opportunity to travel is a definite plus for me - not only do you experience different countries and work practices but also you meet so many different people with different cultures. We have offices in Australia, Houston, Baku and KL and work in a large variety of countries including Nigeria, Brazil and Angola. It's educating and inspiring and a great benefit the energy industry offers to young people.

My training and development with iicorr is ongoing which I feel is important in this industry - I've completed offshore safety courses, advanced my technical knowledge in all aspects of integrity and corrosion but also developed my presentation and business development skills. I eventually aim to use my skills and technical knowledge in a business development role and build my leadership skills. This will provide me with management opportunities in the future and I have made enquires for the MSc in Asset Management at RGU next year.

This year, we have had 5 graduates join us already and it's great to see employers invest in younger people for the future. The oil industry needs to be dedicated to young, talented people and the future of the sector. The energy industry has so much to offer and the prospects are amazing - I look forward to helping other graduates achieve their goals and having a long and satisfying career for myself.

Dawn Simpson - Times They Are A Changing
Being a woman can be hard enough at times but what about when you feel like you are a woman in a man's world? Dawn Simpson talks about how she got into a predominately male populated career and her feelings on the subject.

Dawn is a Corrosion Engineer with iicorr, a specialist technology company in integrity, inspection and corrosion. iicorr provides consultancy, management, engineering and operational support in the Oil & Gas, Process, Utilities and Marine Industry sectors. The company headquarters are in Aberdeen and there are operational offices in Baku, Kuala Lumpur, Perth Australia and Houston.

"I graduated from Robert Gordon University in 1998 and contacted iicorr when I discovered the company was recruiting science and engineering graduates. My roles within iicorr have included an Offshore Cathodic Protection Engineer, and Integrity Services Engineer and my present position as Corrosion Engineer".

Dawn is being sponsored by iicorr to complete her Msc in Corrosion Control Engineering, "I really want to progress in my career but sometimes it feels like I am out-numbered wherever I go!".

Dawn has worked in Canada, Brazil, Malaysia, Singapore, Norway and Africa. Presently, her role as a Corrosion Engineer has enabled her to work in the provision of integrity services relating to Risk Based Inspection on one of the largest oil and gas projects in the world. "The project is based in the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, where I am involved in providing an inspection and integrity service on all BP Caspian Sea facilities and pipelines servicing BP's largest oil and gas project."

Dawn has also been involved in the risk based inspection of over 2000 pressure safety valves belonging to a major oil company as well as offshore inspection of many subsea pipelines and platforms from the North Sea to the Singapore Straight.

"In this generation, there are certainly more female engineers within the oil and gas related industries. I think in Europe, attitudes towards female career development have progressed a little further than in other parts of the world. It should be that women choose a career not because it is based on what is stereotypically considered a 'female' orientated career, but where their main interest lies".

"In iicorr, several female engineers are given exactly the same opportunities as our male colleagues and I do feel lucky that I work in such a forward thinking company. Flexible working hours have been introduced to support employees with non-work related commitments (such as children) and this helps staff combine careers and personal responsibilities more effectively. However, in the case of iicorr, this applies to both men and women!"

Donald Ballantyne
Visiting New Orleans during Mardi Gras or getting close to a pod of whales off Newfoundland - there are many perks to working in the North Sea oil industry says engineer Donald Ballantyne

NAME: Donald Ballantyne
JOB TITLE: Division Manager for iicorr inspection and corrosion services
QUALIFICATIONS: BSc degree in electronic and electrical engineering

GETTING THERE: I experienced a slightly roundabout route, but after an initial stint at The Robert Gordon University, I started working life in the real world with part of the Halliburton group, running downhole (MWD.LWD) tools. A desire to improve my academic knowledge led me to save up some cash and take a full year to return to RGU and build on existing qualifications and gain a BSc degree. This back-to-front gap year was highly enjoyable as I could use some of my vocational experience to good effect and pass this on to my classmates. Even the lecturers appreciated some input from an "outside" viewpoint.

After graduation celebrations had died down, it was time to return to work and I decided to broaden my hands-on technical knowledge with a local ROV manufacturer. This provided excellent exposure to a range of leading-edge technology and field operations that replaced the drilling rigs with luxury yachts.

I also got the chance to develop my experience of other business activities such as sales and marketing. These jobs laid the foundation for the main part of my career, which has now spanned nearly 10 years. I started with iicorr when it was a small independent company called Amitec. In the beginning, there were four of us (if you include the boss's dog, Cindy). Initially, we had just one set of equipment to rent out and earn cash, but a very determined, dynamic team with fresh ideas for low-cost technical inspection solutions was turning over £1million within 3 years.

The merger into the CorrOcean group led to a greatly expanded company and different business streams with an already established international base. Some challenging times lay ahead, with further corporate changes that ultimately led to the creation of iicorr, a new company but one built on the foundation of established reputation and success.

BEST BITS: Without doubt, the opportunity to travel and experience other countries and their cultures. The French Quarter in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, getting up close to a pod of whales off the shores of Newfoundland and sundown on top of Table Mountain in Cape Town are a few examples of life outside the routine of the North Sea.

WORST BITS: I'm sure all service companies will identify with the rigours and pressure of responding to an international client base, particularly in the oilfield. I do believe that you have to go through the pain barrier a few times and learn that you can achieve goals in life you thought were unreachable.

CLAIM TO FAME: I have met some very "colourful" people during my travels, including someone I consider to have godlike status - footballer John Hewitt.

PERKS OF THE JOB: I guess lunches and hotels are normally a good perk while on business travel. It's just as well that iicorr provides discounted health-club membership to keep the waistline in check. Our company also rewards staff for high performance or jobs well done and it is good that I can take my team members out for a meal and glass of mineral water to say thank you.

ADVICE TO OTHERS: If you are a new graduate to industry, do plenty of listening, ask plenty of questions and learn from all those around you no matter what their job title is. There are a few new starts, who after a relatively short spell, develop a "know-it-all-attitude", and this can result in negativity. It is something of a cliche, but I have learned many things over the last 15 years in the industry and keep learning new stuff each day.

I have been fortunate to be coached an mentored by some good colleagues over the years. Now that my career has progressed from field engineer to manager, I intend to pass this back down to the new guys because they are the industry's future.
